What is Cubital Tunnel Syndrome?

Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common nerve compression syndrome after carpal tunnel. It occurs when the ulnar nerve is compressed or irritated as it passes through the cubital tunnel on the inner side of the elbow (the "funny bone" area).

The ulnar nerve controls sensation to the little finger and half of the ring finger, and powers many small muscles in the hand that control fine movements. When compressed, it causes numbness, tingling, and eventually weakness.

Unlike carpal tunnel syndrome which affects the thumb side, cubital tunnel syndrome affects the pinky side of the hand. The symptoms are often worse when the elbow is bent, such as during sleep or phone use.

Symptoms

Early Symptoms

• Numbness in ring and little fingers

• Tingling worse when elbow is bent

• Symptoms when holding phone to ear

• Night-time numbness

Advanced Symptoms

• Constant numbness

• Weak grip and pinch

• Muscle wasting between fingers

• Difficulty with fine motor tasks

Treatment Options

Non-Surgical Treatment
  • Avoid prolonged elbow bending
  • Night splint to keep elbow straight
  • Elbow pad to protect nerve
  • Nerve gliding exercises
Surgical Treatment

Cubital tunnel release: Decompressing the nerve at the elbow

Ulnar nerve transposition: Moving the nerve to a protected position in front of the elbow

Choice depends on nerve stability and surgeon preference. Both have good outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cubital tunnel syndrome?+

Cubital tunnel syndrome is compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, the second most common nerve compression after carpal tunnel. It causes numbness and tingling in the ring and little fingers, and weakness in grip.

What causes cubital tunnel syndrome?+

Causes include prolonged elbow bending (sleeping, phone use), leaning on elbow, previous elbow injury or arthritis, and anatomical variations. The nerve is vulnerable where it passes through a narrow tunnel behind the inner elbow.

How much does cubital tunnel surgery cost in Hyderabad?+

Cubital tunnel release surgery costs approximately ₹50,000-80,000 in Hyderabad. More complex procedures like ulnar nerve transposition may cost ₹70,000-1,00,000. Insurance typically covers this surgery.

What is the recovery after cubital tunnel surgery?+

Recovery involves splinting for 2 weeks, then gradual movement. Most patients see improvement in numbness within weeks, but full nerve recovery may take 3-6 months. Hand therapy helps optimize outcomes.

Can cubital tunnel syndrome be treated without surgery?+

Mild cases can improve with activity modification (avoiding elbow bending), night splinting, and nerve gliding exercises. Surgery is recommended for persistent symptoms, weakness, or muscle wasting.
